With a full-time faculty of about 130, the Division of Mathematical & Physical Sciences seeks to expand our physical and mathematical understanding of the universe, from its microscopic substructure to its largest structures, from our own Earth to the edge of the universe and the beginning of time. The language used is mathematical. Discovery and understanding advance by the interplay between theory and experiment or observation. The Mathematical & Physical Sciences Division is a national leader in addressing the persistent problem of underrepresentation in the sciences in the U.S. Berkeley enrolls and graduates more underrepresented minorities with Ph.D.'s in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering than any other university. Our staff is available to assist undergraduates and graduate students, as well as prospective students.

This position manages all program components related to MPS Scholars, including the MPS Scholars Mentoring Network, MPS Scholars Undergraduate Research, MPS 1 Orientation Course, and MPS Launch Day. MPS Scholars is a structured approach that enables UR students to:

• benefit from cross-generational mentoring
• learn how to navigate paths into the scientific community, e.g. get access to faculty
• understand how to traverse MPS fields for cross-disciplinary connections
• access paid scientific opportunities, including research opportunities
• access skill development opportunities that aid in the development of scientific identities
• benefit from learning opportunities that boost academic achievement
• acquire social networks that facilitate opportunities for professional advancement
• acquire social networks that provide an authentic sense of belonging
• become integral, life-long members and leaders of the science community

Under guidance from MPS Scholars Associate Director, implement and manage a program with the following administrative and programmatic responsibilities:

MPS Scholars Mentoring Network

• Coordinate with departments, Letters and Science advising, departmental advisers, faculty, staff, and student advisory boards, and student organizations to improve design of mentoring initiative, administer the project, and track participation.
• Communicate and meet with students.
• Manage recruitment, pairing, orientations, and training for mentors and mentees.
• Implement and coordinate events and professional development opportunities.

Summer Undergraduate Research

• Prepare and implement plans for summer, and possibly semester-long research opportunities for undergraduates, their mentors and faculty supervisors.
• Lead development of mathematics specific research opportunities.
• Implement and coordinate events and professional development opportunities for research participants.
• Administer stipends in coordination with Project & Policy Analyst.
• Coordinate with staff and faculty of partnering campus and departmental research programs to track and support research participants.
• Coordinate with departmental staff and faculty to implement research based courses.
• Administer program evaluations.

MPS Orientations

• Partner with departments to design and execute MPS Launch Day and other orientation sessions.

Career Development

• Coordinate with Development and Alumni Relations teams to plan and implement career development activities, including but not limited to, career panels, industry information sessions, and career planning workshops.

Yield and Cal Day

• Design and implement strategies for early and consistent outreach to prospective MPS students during the recruitment process.
• Organize MPS Scholars activities for Cal Day.

Communications and Marketing

• In collaboration with Project & Policy Analyst, develop and distribute program communications and documents including website updating, marketing materials, forms, etc.

Assess Program Effectiveness

• Support research team to monitor program success.
• Implement evaluations for each component of the program.
• Assist with program evaluation and reporting to funders, advisory boards and university administrators.

Complete other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.
• Knowledge and experience in analyzing problems and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering academic programs.
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse population that includes faculty, staff, students, and other constituents.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to clearly convey factual material.

• Knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development. General knowledge of academic environments, student development and persistence, and diverse learning environments.
• Knowledge of personal growth and development areas, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
• Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement.
• Familiarity with research methodologies and research designs.
• Knowledge of University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
