Job Description

Principal Scientist/Senior Principal Scientist - X-ray Crystallography

Cambridge, MA

Requisition Number: CHM21-902

Blueprint Medicines is a global precision therapy company that invents life-changing therapies for people with cancer and hematologic disorders. Applying an approach that is both precise and agile, we create medicines that selectively target genetic drivers, with the goal of staying one step ahead across stages of disease. Since 2011, we have leveraged our research platform, including expertise in molecular targeting and world-class drug design capabilities, to rapidly and reproducibly translate science into a broad pipeline of precision therapies. Today, we are delivering approved medicines directly to patients in the United States and Europe, and we are globally advancing multiple programs for genomically defined cancers, systemic mastocytosis, and cancer immunotherapy.

What will you do?

Blueprint Medicines has built an integrated discovery platform that combines genomics and medicinal chemistry expertise with a novel kinase inhibitor library. Additionally, Blueprint is exploring complementary modalities to inhibit kinases as well as exploring protein targets outside of kinases. To aid in our mission of rapidly developing highly selective compounds to address clear genomic drivers of disease, we are seeking an experienced and motivated scientist with expertise in x-ray crystallography to join our Drug Discovery team. In this role, the ideal candidate will coordinate crystallographic and biophysical needs and apply structure-based drug design principles across multiple discovery projects.

What will be your responsibilities?

  • Provide x-ray crystallographic and protein structure-function support, including structure-based drug design, to on-going drug discovery projects and new target discovery initiatives
  • Coordinate with external contract research organizations on delivering target: inhibitor crystal structures, including troubleshooting of construct, expression and crystallization issues on challenging targets
  • Maximize the impact of structural information and associated data in drug discovery programs
  • Develop an expertise around kinase structure, kinase structure-function and small molecule SAR across kinases
  • Provide construct design and protein expression/purification expertise for biophysics initiatives and screening campaigns; coordinate protein needs utilizing external sources

What qualifications do we require?

  • A PhD and 7+ years of protein crystallography experience within a pharmaceutical or biotechnology setting
  • A track record of impact in drug design efforts as evidenced by publications and patents
  • Experience in utilizing structural information to derive structure-function or structure-mechanism hypotheses to help advance discovery projects
  • Experience effectively managing external and/or internal collaborations across sites or across disciplines
  • Demonstrated experience functioning within multi-disciplinary project teams

What qualifications do we prefer?

  • Experience in kinase inhibitor drug discovery highly preferred but not required
  • Familiarity with biophysical screening and profiling methods such as SPR, ITC, DSF and MST a plus

What capabilities do you bring?

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • A desire to participate in a highly creative and interdisciplinary environment
  • A demonstrated ability to scientifically influence and motivate others
  • A team player, who listens effectively and invites response and discussion
  • A collaborator who communicates in an open, clear, complete, timely and consistent manner

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
